Jobie Reviews Music 21: Other People's Problems (album) by Breton

Other People’s Problems is a 2012 album by Breton. It is a unique specimen, being unlike anything that I’ve listened to up to now. The album comes close to alternative, but even that is a misleading thing to categorize this as. The album, as described by the bandcamp page, prides itself on having a “random structure”. This is especially true, as some of the tracks simply can’t be described. They’re nothing like rock, pop, jazz, or any major genre.

That said, the album still manages to be interesting to listen to. During the album, you may hear anything from footsteps, trains, and staticky sounds within the tracks. This apparently comes from Breton’s obsession with recording anything that catches their attention, and putting it into a song that they believe loosely tells a story of sorts.

“The Commission” is highly contested both in what the actual lyrics are and what the song even means. Some agreement has been made on parts of the song, but as for 3-4 minutes in, nobody has a clear consensus. This type of music would fit right into a “vibe game”, mainly for its strange structure, and as said by the bandcamp description, influencing by surrealism. Strange listen. You’ll have to listen to the album to fully get what I mean when I say this album is weird.
