Jobie Reviews Music 108: Pain Addiction (album) by A Fallen Mind. Requested by F63.

Pain Addiction is a 2010 alternative rock album by the band A Fallen Mind. It contains 13 tracks, spanning 43 minutes and 52 seconds worth of music. The album’s sound is in very stark contrast to that of A Fallen Mind’s The Human Error, which was released 1 year after this album. Unlike that album, it has a lot more variety in its composition, opting to use a multitude of different instruments to create a very unique sound.

The album makes itself known with the aforementioned use of many different instruments. Whilst the lead singer is busy delivering harsh vocals, the instrumentation might be anything from a synth-heavy melody, to a track that has bongos in its composition! This album’s sound is most certainly not like anything I’ve heard before, so props to A Fallen Mind for that.

Speaking of the album’s harsh vocals, they’re mixed in a manner where the vocals are sort of “drowned out”, so to speak. This makes the vocals have an interesting feel to them, where they can sometimes even feel a bit creepy. It’s a very interesting decision to have the vocals mastered this way, and a welcome one at that.

Of course, for those who preferred the sound of The Human Error, there are still tracks on this album which deliver a similar sound that that album delivered. For example, the track “Party Til You’re Dead”, which sounds like a track that could’ve been on The Human Error!

At first, I was very confused as to why this album was categorized as “alternative rock” on its bandcamp page. Then I got to track 3, and the very intriguing sound kicked in. Once you listen to it for yourself, you’ll get what I mean. It’s a very hard sound to really describe, since it’s not a very common sound to hear from an album.

My favorite tracks from this album are “Mourning Sun”, “Scorpio Lover”, and “You’re So Evil (It’s Beautiful)”.

Overall, Pain Addiction is an album that delivers a creative, unique sound which I have reason to believe no other album has. Its interesting incorporation of anything from synths to bongos makes for a sound like no other. This one is definitely worth a listen, purely for its fascinating instrumentation.
