The Midsummer Station is a 2012 album by Owl City. It is a pop album, with many of its songs receiving tons of radio play.
“Dreams and Disasters” is an upbeat track about finding the positive in the dreams and disasters. The song is mainly about feeling alive. Nice track.
“Shooting Star” is an upbeat, highly motivational song. Good track.
“Gold” is a song that acknowledges that you’re “gold” - valued for who you are. Nice track.
“Dementia” is a lighthearted song about someone with dementia. Basically, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, a kidz-boppier version of *Everywhere at the End of Time*.
“I’m Coming After You” is a song not meant to be taken literally. If it is taken literally, this song is about a police officer falling in love with a murder suspect. If taken metaphorically like it’s supposed to be though, it’s about a guy falling for someone they’ve seen, and trying to get them to date them. Good track.
“Speed of Love” opens with one of the best sounding pop beats I’ve heard. The electronic sound is such a bop on this track, and the chorus goes perfectly with it. Good track.
“Good Time” is probably the song that most people know from this album. It’s a song about - well, having a good time. Pure 2010s nostalgia. Good track.
“Embers” is a song about being sad, then eventually finding the thing that brings you back to being alive. Good track. Also the chorus on this one is really nice too.
“Silhouette” is a song that relates to the previous track. The track is about someone who struggles with anxiety, loneliness - among other issues. The fire found in “Embers” is now unbearable, but the narrator chooses to go on with it. It’s one of the more solemn tracks in the album, being considerably more downbeat. Good track.
“Metropolis” is a song about Superman. Pretty nice track.
The final track, “Take It All Away”, is a breakup song. Nice.
Overall rating: Owl City manages to make tons of electronic bops in the span of 11 tracks. Pure 2010s goodness.
8/10
