Jobie Reviews Music 119: Chasing Fire (album) by David Vector. Requested by F63.

Chasing Fire is a 2020 electronic album by David Vector. It is 10 tracks long, spanning 1 hour and 1 minute of music. The album is notable for being Vector’s first released album since Go - a 14 year gap. Its sound is a major shift from that album, as noted in this pdf several times. It’s no wonder, too, as, unlike Go, this album is a lot more synth-driven, with several tracks having time for full blown synth breaks.

With that out of the way, I think it’s time that we dive into the quality of the album’s music. The album is a lot more refined than Go was, having a more clearly defined sound through its 10 tracks. Vector has gone on to say that the album is a progressive rock/electronic blend, and it’s easy to hear this in the album’s sound. The album makes room for all of these elements to take shape, being blended perfectly together throughout the over an hour run time.

Tracks like “A State of Space” highlight the synthy nature of the album perfectly, with that track in particular being the greatest use of synths that Vector employs across 10 tracks. Despite the synth sound being present across all 10 tracks, its sound never gets boring or dull. Instead, Vector uses this sound to his full advantage, with every track making use of it in a fantastic way.

The titular track, “Chasing Fire”, is a very good blend of the aforementioned progressive rock and electronic elements, making use of guitar elements and electronic elements equally throughout its runtime. Perhaps one of the best showcases of how Vector blends both genres on this album.

The closing track, “Activate the Window”, is worth mentioning as well. In addition to being the longest track out of the 10 tracks, it’s also a musical summarization of the 9 other tracks. You hear every single element that the album has built upon in its nearly 8 minute runtime, which makes it the perfect closing track to a nice album.

My favorite tracks from this album are “Sky Why”, “Casino Prestidigitato”, and “Wake from Sleep”.

Overall, David Vector’s newest effort, Chasing Fire, is a welcome departure from his previous album, Go. It showcases the new sound that Vector will possess going forward, which has major potential. The perfect blend of progressive rock and electronic make for an interesting listen, which keeps the listener hooked throughout its 1 hour and 1 minute timespan. Definitely worth a listen.
