Jobie Reviews Music 133: Goreblast (album) by Satan's Revenge on Mankind. Requested by F63.

Goreblast is a 2006 goregrind album by the band Satan’s Revenge on Mankind. It is 24 tracks long, spanning 55 minutes and 17 seconds. Its sound is somewhat typical of a goregrind album, with most of the typical instrumentation highlights being present on the album. However, this album has a key difference in that, while some tracks have pretty fast paced, good instrumentation, a large portion have instrumentation which are produced well but lack the strength similar albums’ tracks have.

Another issue with the album are its mostly lackluster vocals. All of the other goregrind albums that I’ve reviewed have had very nice vocals, being delivered nicely and never feeling forced. However, a lot of the tracks on this album follow in the opposite vein. Many tracks, such as “Angels Taste Like Chicken”, have vocals which lack the high quality delivery that most other albums have.

I will, however, take a moment to say that the album gets leagues better after track 10. After this point, the album grows some sensibility and starts producing tracks with well-made instrumentation. This doesn’t, however, fix the poorly delivered vocals.

I hate to accuse albums of inserting filler tracks, but “Technojunkie Massacre'' certainly feels like it was solely thrown in to extend the runtime. The track itself is probably one of the worst on here, having almost no purpose on the album whatsoever. Very poor vocals and an alright instrumentation make this track feel like it would’ve been better off not being on the album at all.

You may be asking me, “Well, in Jobie Reviews Music 55, you said that judging an album like this on vocals is illogical, so why are you complaining now?”. There’s a difference between good and bad goregrind/pornogrind vocals. Sounds stupid, but it’s true. For example, compare the vocals on The Greatest Shits to the vocals on this album! They sound nothing alike! This is because on this album, the vocals are delivered in a very mediocre fashion. You really need to listen to the album to get what I mean here.

Although I’m making this album sound terrible, there are some redeeming qualities to it. As mentioned before, the instrumentation is (mostly) well made, and it's what you would expect from an album in this genre. Certain tracks are far better than others, lacking (or at least having downplayed varieties of) the things that I’ve complained about in this review so far.

My favorite tracks from this album are “Satan Rules”, “C.M.F.P”, “Meat Is Good Food”, “Belial’s Finger Sticks in the Asshole of the Pope”, and “World War Gore”.

Overall, Goreblast is a more mediocre example of the sound that this genre can deliver. Though not an awful album, its vocals and sometimes weak instrumentation make it one of the weaker albums in the genre. At the very least, it has well produced instrumentation (mostly after track 10), and a few tracks which save the album from being totally awful.

Overall rating:

6/10
