Jobie Reviews Music 135: It Just Gets Worse (album) by Anal Cunt. Requested by one of my friends.

It Just Gets Worse is a 1999 grindcore album by the band Anal Cunt. It is 39 tracks long, however, the runtime of the album is only 32 minutes and 15 seconds. This is because each track is between 30 seconds to a minute, and nothing more. The album’s most notable trait are the extremely offensive song titles that each track contains. This is likely why the album is called It Just Gets Worse, as these titles only get worse as the album goes on.

That being said, the content of the album itself is, to put it lightly, hit or miss. During very spare moments in its near half hour run time, you’ll get some very fast-paced, well made tracks with good instrumentation, and vocals to accommodate them. However, around 80% of the tracks on this album simply fall flat on their face. Let me explain why.

Firstly, you have the first 10 or so tracks, which have instrumentation that’s lackluster and unengaging. To make matters worse, the vocals (which ideally should be well delivered scream vocals), never pack the correct punch. On top of all of this, each track has some of the most uninspired production that I’ve ever seen.

Perhaps Anal Cunt simply had no idea what to write about. This would explain the short tracks, which naturally go absolutely nowhere in their short run time, only really amounting to 30ish seconds of mediocrity most of the time. Although the offensive titles and vocals are nothing new, they don’t do what the band wants them to do. They don’t offend me so much as they come across as childish and “edgy”.

If you’re an avid reader of Jobie Reviews Music, you’ll know that I also review pornogrind and goregrind. Sure, those genres have questionable titles (and “lyrics”), but they’re part of the charm of those genres. Here, they only serve to attempt to offend, which honestly reminds me of internet trolls who think they’re funny by joking about Hitler or 9/11.

The album does have a few saving factors, however. Most of the album contains instrumentation which is well made, and actually sounds really good! This is especially true when the band comes to their senses and makes tracks like “I’m Really Excited About The Upcoming David Buskin Concert”. Most of the longer tracks range from decent to nice, so at the very least this album isn’t entirely bad.

My favorite tracks from this album are “I Paid J Howell To Rape You”, “I Lit Your Baby On Fire”, “Body by Auschwitz”, “Hitler Was A Sensitive Man”, “I’m Really Excited About The Upcoming David Buskin Concert”, and “I Got An Office Job For The Sole Purpose Of Sexually Harassing Women”.

Overall, It Just Gets Worse is a mediocre grindcore album which occasionally delivers some really good tracks. Though the album attempts to be offensive, it more or less comes off as edgy. Some tracks lack memorability, good vocals, good instrumentation, or even all 3! I personally don’t recommend this album, as there are far better grindcore albums out there. If you must listen to it, though, you should only listen to the tracks highlighted above. It’ll save you some trouble.
