Neural Distortions is a 2015 experimental electronic album by Novaki. It is 11* tracks long, spanning 34 minutes and 59 seconds of music. It is notable for having a very interesting atmosphere, making use of some unique instrumentation which I rarely hear on any albums. Novaki makes use of seldom used electronic sounds. This is very evident in the first track of the album, which uses relatively high pitched sounds to create its instrumentation.
Although it uses some rather unconventional methods of making an electronic sound (hence the genre), the album only has 1 track that was too experimental for me. The track in particular, “Transcend”, has a great atmosphere to it. However, its harsh, grating buzzing sound makes re-listenability difficult to imagine. This doesn’t make it a bad track, just one that I wouldn’t listen to multiple times.
Other than that, this album frequently delivers tracks which have a great atmosphere, strange (but great!) instrumentation, and an overall great sound. In the track “Requiem”, for example, the track produces an atmosphere which is, at times menacing, and other times mysterious.
A notable outlier to the album’s experimental nature is the last track, “AMK”. It’s an upbeat electronic track which has very little experimental elements contained within its instrumentation. It’s by far one of the best tracks on the album, having a really nice sound and a well made instrumentation.
My favorite tracks from the album are “Cerebral Hemorrhaging”, “Data”, “Requiem”, and “AMK”.
Overall, Neural Distortions is a very nice album. Each track on the album delivers a great atmosphere, owing to their well made instrumentation and overall sound. Neural Distortions is an all round great album, using its experimental nature to create nearly 35 minutes of strange, but still great, sound.
*Non-bandcamp version reviewed. The bandcamp version has an additional track called “‘Goodbye World!’”.
