Jobie Reviews Music 149: Behemoth (album) by Gost. Requested by F63.

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

Behemoth is a 2015 dark synth album by Gost. It is 11 tracks in length, encompassing 39 minutes and 28 seconds of music. The album is notable for its incredibly potent 80’s synth sound, with a dark twist added into its instrumentation. The album’s runtime is packed with dark synth melodies which are some of the most dance-worthy dark synth tunes I’ve ever heard, with menacing instrumentation being contained on most of the album’s tracks.

The album is a surprisingly enjoyable half hour display of groovy dark synth sound, which itself takes a number of twists and turns throughout the album’s 11 tracks. The beginning track, “Beyond”, is perhaps one of the most deceiving (in the best possible way) beginnings to any album, with none of the synth elements present in the especially short track. It more or less serves a segue into track two, featuring mostly ambient sound in its composition. I like to think of it as the calm before the fierce dark synth storm, that does little to prepare the listener for the incredible synth sound that they’re about to hear immediately after this track.

The album consistently delivers track after track of dark synth incredibleness, the aforementioned groovy dark synth song being ever present on most of the tracks it delivers. Some of the tracks on this album deliver some incredibly heavy synth beats, with the track “Master” having powerful synth tunes in the beginning and middle of its composition.

The album is not afraid to take twists and turns (as mentioned before) in its instrumentation, with the final track having sections where the intense dark synth sound rises and falls. The album also features a track with vocals, which adds variety to the already amazing album. Little things like this are what keep the album intriguing to listen to, making one wonder what the album will deliver next.

One minor complaint I have about the album are the tracks that are about a minute (or under a minute long). I feel as if these tracks should’ve been a lot longer, which would’ve allowed for their instrumentation to really shine. Still, these tracks deliver the great instrumentation that I’ve been talking about this entire review, so this doesn’t really affect the final score of this album. My favorite tracks from this album include “Genesee Avenue”, “Night Crawler”, “Tongue”, and “Behemoth”.

Overall, Behemoth is an incredible showcase of dark synth sound. The album features a dark synth sound which is not afraid to take twists and turns in its instrumentation. The final track in particular is a spectacular close to this amazing album, with the sound of the album culminating in a 4 minute onslaught of amazingness. I recommend this album for those who have never even heard of dark synth, since it’s just that incredible.

Overall rating:

9.5/10
