Here’s to the Devil is a 2019 folk album by The Bridge City Sinners. It contains 10 tracks, spanning 29 minutes and 49 seconds of music. The album is not your typical folk album, with scream vocals and strange themes sprinkled throughout its composition. The album, as you could probably guess by the title, is mostly centered around satanic/devilish themes, the lyrics to each song feeling like retellings of mysterious tales.
Unlike most of the folk music that I’ve reviewed on Jobie Reviews Music, this album has no fear in bending its folk sound, incorporating elements of other folk genres in its instrumentation. The aforementioned scream vocals are probably the best example of this, providing a punk-esque feel to the devilish folk album. The album is also not afraid to drop several f-bombs in its lyrics, contrasting well with the folk label that the album grants itself.
The instrumentation is about what you would expect from a folk album, with medium-paced folk melodies encapsulating the entirety of the album. The vocals blend well with the album’s composition, making for an interesting blend of musical elements. Nothing to complain about in that department.
Speaking of the lyrics, they’re very well written on this album, effectively conveying fictional accounts of various mysterious occurrences. I’d suggest looking up the lyrics for each song on the album for yourself, since they’re quite interesting, even on their own.
Though the track “Satan’s Song” certainly could’ve been longer, the album really has no low points, with the quality of each track being consistent throughout its runtime. The band consistently delivers a folk song that’s like no other, with each track being well-produced.
My favorite tracks from this album are “Kreacher”, “Song of the Siren”, “Ashes”, and “Witches’ Wrath”.
Overall, Here’s to the Devil is a particularly unique dosage of folk sound which no other folk album has ever delivered. With elements that set it apart from other folk albums, this one is worth the listen for the uniqueness alone.
