Jobie Reviews Music 151: "Computer Man", from the album "When You Dream a Dream"

(requested by F63)

“Computer Man” is a 1982* Children’s music song from the album When You Dream a Dream by Bob Schneider and the Rainbow Kids. It is 3 minutes and 34 seconds long. The song makes use of signature 80’s synths, seeming to take its structure from the likes of synth pop.

The subject matter is decidedly 80’s as well, centering around a “Computer Man” who the children featured on the song seem to be fascinated by. Of course, being a song meant for children, the song is quite ridiculous in nature, but this makes the song charming in its own way. The song is also surprisingly well-produced, with good instrumentation and vocals being present in the song.

The song also makes a clever reference to Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny”, with “Computer Man” asking a character named “Jenny” for her number (which makes a lot of sense, since “867-5309/Jenny” had come out 2 years before this song)

Overall, “Computer Man” is a charming children’s song which still manages to have appeal to older audiences, thanks to the very 80’s sound that the song carries. The quality of the track is surprisingly good as well, with good instrumentation being present on the track. Nothing to complain about here.

*Though Spotify says that the album that this song is from was released in 2021, it was actually released in 1982 (source: Discogs) (or 1983, according to Wikipedia).

Overall rating:

8.8/10
