Jobie Reviews Music 154: The State Songs Volume Three (album) by Rick Pickren. Requested by F63.

The State Songs Volume Three is a 2021 country album by Rick Pickren. It is 13 tracks long, spanning 32 minutes and 50 seconds of music. The album is volume three in a series of four albums that feature the state songs of all 50 U.S. states. Rick Pickren continues the style deployed on the previous two albums, despite the three year gap between this album and The State Songs Vol. 2.

The good instrumentation and vocals that are present on all 13 tracks contained on the album (along with the continued usage of an older style of country music) makes these patriotic songs come to life, keeping true to their historical roots. The classic state songs are enhanced by Pickren’s great musicianship, making even the most reused melodies (looking at you, “O Christmas Tree”) still feel enjoyable to listen to.

This volume of the four volume series is just as good as the previous two, with the aforementioned quality of the music presented within the album making each track a pleasure to listen to. The album has “feel good” vibes, much like the previous two volumes in the series. All in all, though four years had passed between this album and The State Songs Vol. 1, Pickren retains his effective formula for covering these classic tracks.

The album is also indicative of just how much each state song has changed since its release. For example, as recently as four days ago (June 6th, 2021), the lyrics to the state song “Oregon, My Oregon” (which is one of the songs featured on this album) were changed.

My favorite tracks from this album are “Old New Hampshire”, “Wyoming”, “Carolina”, and “Oregon, My Oregon”.

Overall, The State Songs Volume Three is another great album from the talented country artist. With good instrumentation and vocals encompassing its half hour runtime (much like the previous two volumes of The State Songs), the album is another display of Pickren’s great musicianship. The consistent quality of the tracks featured on this album makes it a worthwhile listen, especially considering the quality of the last two volumes.
