Mantrapping for Sport and Profit is a 2001 stoner rock album by the band Scissorfight. It is 13 tracks long, spanning 41 minutes and 32 seconds of music. The album is an over half hour showcase of stoner rock madness, with numerous riffs and bridges being present on each of the 13 tracks. It is in this regard that the album manages to entertain and excite the listener for its entire runtime, with the great composition making for an all around enjoyable listening experience.
While the album isn’t always lyrically amazing (some tracks just repeat the title of the track for the majority of the song, though this issue is mostly alleviated by the high quality instrumentation and variety of lyrical content on other tracks), the album’s headbang-worthy sound is flawless, with no part of it feeling unnecessary or prolonged. The album leans towards hard rock at times, with the instrumentation making for 13 aggressive tracks.
The vocals delivered by ex-lead singer Ironlong on this album are what top off this already great album (the instrumentals alone would’ve made for a great instrumental album!), adding depth to the already aggressive, highly variable album. The track “Blizzards, Buzzards, and Bastards” in particular might remind some reading this review of Ministry’s The Land of Rape and Honey, Ironlung’s delivery being quite similar to the way Al Jourgensen delivered his vocals on that album.
My favorite tracks from this album are “Acid for Blood”, “Deliver the Yankee Coffin”, “The Most Dangerous Animal Is Me”, and “Mantrap”.
All in all, Mantrapping for Sport and Profit is a fantastic effort by the New Hampshire band, with each of the 13 tracks presented on the over half hour album being of high quality. The instrumentation on this album is absolutely incredible, enhancing otherwise lyrically repetitive tracks like “New Hampshire’s Alright If You Like Fighting” and turning them into headbang worthy melodies. A highly enjoyable listen, that’s for sure!
