The Money Store is a 2012 experimental hip hop album by Death Grips. It is the group's first full-length album, and it is also the first Death Grips album reviewed by Jobie Reviews Music, across both series.
The album's 13 songs each have a distinctive texture and feel, but the most common elements of the album are MC Ride's consistently delivered vocals, and well-produced, frantic electronic instrumentals that compliment the equally chaotic lyrics of the album's songs.
This can be best seen in the song “The Cage”, a lyrically violent song that is soundtracked by an aggressive, bassy electronic instrumental, which fits the song immensely. Death Grips' ability to produce beats that match the tone of their lyrics is adequately demonstrated on each of the 13 tracks in this album.
Speaking of lyrics, Death Grips manages to write some fairly creative ones on this album: in the song “Fuck That”, MC Rider speaks the line “Head wear your face liked a yamakulapse” - I actually had to look up what this word meant, since I (and likely nobody else reading this) have never heard of a “yamakulapse”. It is apparently a combination of the word “yarmulke” and “kulapse” (collapse). There aren't many other songs out there that have required me to look up what the words they used meant, so I think Death Grips deserve bonus points for coming up with lines like this!
As for my favorite tracks on the album, in chronological order, those are “Hustle Bones”, “The Cage”, “Bitch Please”, and “Hacker”. The most popular song on the album is “Get Got”, with 34,464,959 Spotify plays, as of the time of writing. Although “Get Got” is a pretty good song, I feel like the other tracks on this album should have more plays, since they're as good or better than “Get Got”.
Overall, The Money Store manages to have creative lyrics and complimentary electronic instrumentals, which make it a recommended listen for anyone looking for something different to listen to. You won't find this style anywhere else.
