Darkness Falls is a 2020 symphonic metal* single by Zero-Project. It contains 2 tracks, spanning 9 minutes and 54 seconds. Despite its status as a single, it manages to pack a lot of depth and variety into both of its tracks, with some genuinely interesting melodies being presented on the single’s two tracks.

This owes itself to the orchestral/symphonic melodies that are combined with metal instrumentation, which make for a very interesting listening experience (as mentioned previously). The clashing of the two genres that the single showcases allows for pianos, stringed instruments, and even synthesizers, to play alongside some killer metal riffs.

The variety that this particular blend of the two genres allows is quite incredible, with lots of minute details in its instrumentation allowing for a listening experience like no other. Zero-Project also made the choice to make the metal elements of the single match the orchestral elements (that is, the metal guitar instrumentation isn’t full on “Dragonforce” while the orchestral parts are a serene piano piece), which allows for these elements to blend together quite nicely.

When I first listened to this single, I was sure that the titular and first track, “Darkness Falls” would’ve been my favorite of the two, but after several relistens I can confidently conclude that the second track, “Gothic”, is the best out of the two tracks on the single. Opinions may vary, but I find that “Gothic” is more musically interesting than “Darkness Falls”, though both tracks are highly interesting in their own right.

Overall, Darkness Falls is an excellent single that showcases a rich blend of metal and orchestral elements, which allows the listener a listening experience like no other. The many instruments deployed on the single’s two tracks make the listening experience highly variable, which allows for a high amount of replay value. Interesting stuff!
