Awake is a 2009 album by Christain Rock band Skillet. It contains 12 tracks, spanning 42 minutes. Compared to other albums I’ve reviewed, this one is a lot more well known. Which might be an understatement, considering the album is not only award-winning, but also has gone double-platinum, selling 2,000,000 copies. Is this popularity deserved? Yes. The album opens with the explosive banger of a track, “Hero”, which contains some amazing guitar work (thank Ben Kasica!) and vocals.
The track right after, “Monster”, follows in the same vein, being another high energy track with fantastic vocals. The album takes a break from high energy tracks for a while, but that’s not to say the tracks aren’t still bangers. Think Rise Against after Siren Song of the Counter Culture.
“Awake and Alive”, “One Day Too Late”, and “It’s Not Me, It’s You” are all good tracks. Skillet manages to make this album interesting to listen to throughout its entire runtime. The vocals and overall sound never get old, with track after track retaining the quality of the album’s most popular track, “Monster”.
The lyrical subject matter of course closely relates to Christainity, but even if you don’t follow Christainity, you’ll probably like this album. Especially if you like other bands such as Rise Against. This album doesn’t have the same sound that Rise Against has of course, but some tracks have similar “vibes'' to their albums. The closest album equivalent would probably be Siren Song of the Counter Culture, with some high energy tracks and some less high energy ones in there too.
The songs in this album have great sub-sections to them as well, with some unexpected guitar sound in tracks like “Believe” and “Sometimes”, and a strange ending bit on “Sometimes” as well. The album’s closing song, “Lucy”, is also another good track.
Overall, Skillet did a great job with this album. It deserves the 2 million copies that it sold.
