Jobie Reviews Music 24: Knee Deep in the Hoopla (album) by Starship

Knee Deep In The Hoopla is a 1985 album by Starship. You may know this song for “We Built This City”, and “Sara”, as they are the two most popular tracks from it. Despite “We Built This City” making multiple “worst song” lists, it’s actually a pretty good track (to me anyways). It’s perfectly 80s, with the synths to match. I’ve listened to it a multitude of times before I reviewed this album, so much so that YouTube Music frequently puts it in the “Quick Picks” section, as well as my Supermix.

Besides the two most popular hits of the album, the other tracks hold up as well. They’re your standard 80s “meant for radio” type tracks, which isn’t a bad thing. In fact, the sound of this album makes it easy to see why the first two tracks absolutely took off in terms of popularity. The sound is great!

Tracks like “Desperate Heart” bring out the more energetic side of the album, with a little bit more drum work sprinkled in. Even if albums like this are prime mainstream radio material, like I’ve said, it doesn’t stop the album from being great. How could you dog on something as 80s as this album? You can’t, really.

Overall, if you like albums that scream 80s music, then listen to this album. I highly recommend listening to “We Built This City”, if nothing else, as it is the highlight of the 9 track album. One thing of note is that the album doesn’t retain the same sound it establishes in the opening track, but that’s not much of a big deal here, as it does retain the sound that’s present in the track “Sara”.

Overall rating:

8.3/10
