Sings Civil War Songs of the South is a 1961 folk album by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The album has 12 tracks, spanning 36 minutes of music. The album, of course, contains songs that were popular civil war songs of the south at one point. Some of these songs have very little information as to their origins, with some songs being poems that were authored by an unknown person.
That said, Tennessee Ernie Ford creates a beautiful rendition of the songs, from marching band songs to country melodies. Being popular war songs from the south, they mostly revolve around concerns of the south during the civil war era, with a few songs that have lyrical themes of “standing up for the rights” of the south.
Other songs are about things such as one of the poem writer’s wives, general southern life, and various other miscellaneous things. “The Bunny Blue Flag” just talks about the history of the confederacy, chronicling the order the states joined all the way up until the 11th state (as can be heard at the end of the song, when Ford says “...and the Bunny Blue flag with a single star grew to 11.”).
The album is quite relaxing to listen to, with Ford having the soft voice that matches some of the track’s more laid-back sound. Some of the better tracks from this album include “The Southern Wagon”, “Dixie”, and “The Bonnie Blue Flag”.
Overall, if you wish to listen to a relaxing album with good songs throughout its entire runtime, then this album is for you.
