Roll of Honour is a 2013 folk album by The Irish Brigade. It has 14 tracks, and adds up to a total of 45 minutes of music. The album consists of Irish and British folk songs, with a variety of different lyrical themes across its 14 tracks.
Most of these tracks revolve around tales of various heroes from Irish and British stories. However, some tracks are just about Irish and British historical figures in general, such as “Kevin Lynch”, which is a track that is about Kevin Andrew Lynch, who was born in an Irish-American family in 1918. He contributed major developments to city planning, with the Kevin Lynch Award; which is given to those who majorly contribute to city form research.
Other than just telling unique stories, Roll of Honour uses its folk sounds to retell these stories in an interesting and fun way. It’s reminiscent of many other folk albums that I’ve reviewed up to this point, but still manages to set itself apart.
Some highlights from this album include “Roll of Honour”, “McElwee’s Farewell”, and “Kevin Lynch”.
Overall, this album tells interesting stories while also managing to set itself apart from similar albums. Definitely listen if you like folk music. It also helps if you research the stories behind these songs before/after listening to them.
