Intention Surpassed is a 2003 deathgrind album by the band Defecation. It contains 13 tracks, totaling 38 minutes of music. The album’s main highlight is the intense vocals and sounds that it delivers, which are quite good on this album. Across the album’s 38 minutes, it consistently delivers energetic deathgrind which remains of quality throughout.
The album opens with the track “Continuum”, which is a nice way to start the album. It has the vocals, the pure deathgrind vocals - everything that makes the album good. It manages to accomplish this in only 1 minute and 30 seconds, making for a short, but sweet, introduction to the album.
The other tracks follow “Continuum” in this regard, being on par or better than it. The guitar that is featured on all 13 tracks of the album (props to Mitch Harris) defines the album’s great sound quite nicely. The lyrics to each song are nicely written, feeling unique and non-repetitive. Examples include lines like “Reconstitute the future/Through celestial winds/Deny the loss of private life/And deadly sin”, and “A fissure uncongealed/A system unconcealed/All will be revealed/When society is healed”.
My favorite track on this album has to be “Cyronically Preserved”, which is the peak of the album in general. The album takes the good instrumentation and vocals that came before it and amplifies that great sound, making for a great track. I’d recommend listening to this track, if nothing else.
Overall, Intention Surpassed is an enjoyable album which delivers the powerful sound you’d expect from a deathgrind album. I recommend listening to “Cyronically Preserved” if you don’t have time to listen to the other tracks. Well done, Mitch Harris.
