In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 is a progressive rock album by the band Coheed and Cambria. It contains 12* tracks, spanning an hour and 9 minutes. The album, as with all of Coheed and Cambria’s albums, continues the story of The Amory Wars from where the last album (in this case, The Second Stage Turbine Blade) left off. The album continues the trend of the excellent sound that Coheed and Cambria established on The Second Stage Turbine Blade, with the same thematic guitar melodies that one would expect from them.
As with Coheed and Cambria’s previous album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, (and most of their albums) the album integrates the story of the comics into the album’s lyrics. Character names and events from the comics can be found throughout all 12 tracks in the hour long album. I won’t dwell on them for too long, however, as I covered the scope of them in Jobie Reviews Music 63. You should keep this in mind when thinking about the lyrics contained in these tracks.
As well as following Coheed and Cambria’s established formula of incorporating thematic elements into their songs, the album retains the sound that made The Second Stage Turbine Blade a great album. In fact, Coheed and Cambria beat out The Second Stage Turbine Blade on this album, in a multitude of ways. The vocals and general instrumentation on this album feel more clearly defined, making for an experience that remains awesome from track to track.
The soundtrack-like melodies that Coheed and Cambria once again deliver on this album make use of the album’s theming perfectly. Every song fits the theme that Coheed and Cambria are going for, with the sound of each track being adjusted to fit each part of the story as needed. For example, the song “The Camper Velourium II: Backend of Forever”, the lyrics and melody match the dark tone that matches the story of the album, with lyrics such as “Crazy were the words that scribbled out your mouth/I stuttered, replacing your face to those words/Where and when would I kill her” being in the aforementioned song.
Even without the story of the albums in mind, the album still feels like the soundtrack to an epic story. This mostly lends itself to the theme-song-like guitar tunes that are delivered on this album. Just like The Second Stage Turbine Blade, you don’t need to need to know the story of the album in order to fully enjoy it. Coheed and Cambria’s incredible use of guitars, drums, and bass on this album are awesome enough to stand on their own.
Some of my favorite tracks from this album are “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”, “The Crowing”, “The Camper Velourium II: Backend of Forever”, and “The Light & the Glass”. Check out “The Camper Velourium II: Backend of Forever” if you’re a fan of dark guitar melodies.
Overall, Coheed and Cambria once again deliver an awesome listening experience which is sure to leave you impressed in some way. Even if you aren’t a fan of the music, you have to appreciate the effort Coheed and Cambria put into this one. Everything from the vocals and the instrumentation manage to surpass The Second Stage Turbine Blade’s sound. Nicely done.
*IMPORTANT NOTICE: On physical releases of this album, there are 11 tracks of silence before the hidden track “21:13” plays. These have been omitted from digital releases of the album, probably since it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to have 11 tracks of just silence on a digital release.
