Jobie Reviews Music 73: Citizen (album) by Army of Me

Citizen is a 2007 alternative rock album by the band Army of Me. The album contains 12 tracks, spanning 49 minutes of music. The album’s sound takes on a “melancholic” feel, its tracks feeling reflective, and even somewhat solemn at times. The album is notable for being the band’s debut album.

Keeping this in mind, the album shines in the instrumentation and vocal department quite nicely. Tracks like “Better Run” see the band putting out relaxing, melancholic tracks which are great for the casual listener. The album evokes a feeling of reflectiveness, but also has a relaxing “vibe” that’s perfect for those days where you just want to chill.

However, a few of the tracks on this album are very “hit or miss” in nature. You’ll either love tracks like “Walking On”, or you won’t. The alternative sound that the album has is likely the main cause of this, with the instrumentation being of less quality in certain tracks.

Despite this, the album still manages to find room for alternative rock melodies to shine. These tracks have great lyrics and an overall great sound. One minor thing to note about this album is that sometimes the vocals can be samey from track to track, but it’s not often.

Some of my favorite tracks from this album are “Going Through Changes”, “Thinking It Over”, and “Walking On”. Especially “Going Through Changes”, which is a reflective, melancholic track that is about - well, going through changes. Lyrics like “And I know that I needed changes, but not this/Cause this is not painless” highlight the reflective tone of the track.

Overall, Army of Me’s Citizen is a nice, calming alternative rock album that’s accessible for the average listener. A good album all around, with a few tracks that fail to stand out on their own.

Overall rating:

8.5/10
