Jobie Reviews Music 78: Living Things (album) by Linkin Park

Living Things is a 2012 alternative rock album by the band Linkin Park. The album consists of 12 tracks, spanning 37 minutes of music. The album is a departure from other Linkin Park albums, in that it incorporates more electronic elements in its composition. The vocals are noticeably less screamy (though there are a few songs that feature scream vocals), and most songs feature normal vocals.

However, there is one major issue with this album that I’d like to address. Some of these songs do not hit in the slightest. Tracks such as “Until It Breaks” fall under the category of “OK!”, unlike Linkin Park’s comparatively better effort Meteora, which never felt bland whilst I was listening to it. However, this album has quite a few “meh” tracks which just don’t stick out on their own.

Nevertheless, the album does have great tracks sprinkled throughout its runtime along with the alright ones. Tracks like “BURN IT DOWN” are one of the examples of the album giving a song a unique feel, with great vocals and instrumentation. The closing track to the album, “POWERELESS”, has more relaxed vocals and refined instrumentation. Overall, the album still does good in quite a few departments, so it isn’t as bad as I might make it sound.

Some of my favorite tracks from this album are “POWERLESS”, “BURN IT DOWN”, and “IN MY REMAINS”.

Overall, Living Things is a great effort by Linkin Park to capture the spirit of their previous albums. Although it has a nice variety of good tracks, it sometimes fails to deliver killer tracks. Even so, this is still a good album in many ways, so it isn’t terrible by any means.

Overall rating:

8/10
