Jobie Reviews Music 79: Territórium (album) by Kárpátia. Requested by F63.

Territórium is a 2015 Hungarian rock album by the band Kárpátia. It contains 10 tracks, spanning 30 minutes of music. The album is filled with tracks that deliver on all fronts; everything from the vocals to the instrumentation on this album is great. As always with foreign albums, I will not be critiquing the lyrics themselves, just the vocals that go along with them.

The album, like the album Így volt! Így lesz!, is a rarity when it comes to Hungarian music, as rock music isn’t that popular of a genre in Hungary, with Kárpátia being one of the handful of examples of Hungarian rock bands.

Moving on to the quality of the music itself, it's what you would expect of a rock album. All the instrumentation is of quality, as are the vocals. Like Így volt! Így lesz!, however, the album occasionally incorporates elements of folk music into its composition, such as the track “Jászkunsági gyerek vagyok”, which incorporates many different instruments that would normally be found in folk in its composition. This makes the tracks on this album more musically interesting than they would be without these elements weaved into them, with the previously mentioned track being the only track of the 10 tracks on the album that has a violin incorporated as one of the instruments.

The rock sound is somewhere in between bog standard rock and punk rock. I’d say it leans more heavily toward punk rock, with some of the guitar sounds on the album usually only being found in punk rock. However, the album still has plenty of elements that make its sound lead towards regular rock as well, so just keep that in mind.

The album’s tracks can range anywhere from being upbeat, to being slower-paced, like the track “Üvegpohar”. This gives the album more variety from track to track, coupled with the already variable sound the album deploys with the incorporation of other instruments into its composition.

Some of my favorite tracks from this album include “Határvadász induló”, “Jászkunsági gyerek vagyok”, and “Üvegpohár”.

Overall, Territórium is a nice album that makes for a great, and at times interesting, listen. Kárpátia delivers on all the elements that make an album great, including great vocals and instrumentation. Listen to this one if you want to listen to something you’ve (probably) never heard before.

Overall rating:

8.5/10
