Full Steam Ahead! is a 2013 album by the Steampunk band The Cog is Dead. The album is 13 tracks long, spanning 51 minutes and 29 seconds. The album’s main highlight is the rather creative lyrics that feature on each track, which make each track memorable, and able to stand out by themselves. Tracks on this album also have great instrumentation and vocals, with lots of instruments being involved in each track’s composition.
If you thought I was kidding when I said that The Cog is Dead has creative lyrical themes, I’m not. For example, the track “My Metal Boy” revolves around the singer creating a robot that they then raise as their own - up until they’re old enough to live on their own. There are many, many other (probably better) examples, but if I pointed them all out, there’d be no point in you listening to the album.
The main reason I didn’t name a genre in the first paragraph was because the album shifts between almost-rock to (in one specific track) piano melodies. For this reason, it’s not easy to pin down the exact genre that this album is. However, I will point out that Google lists the album’s genre as acoustic, while Discogs categorizes it as rock. I’ll let you decide what genre this album is for yourself.
Besides the creative lyrics, the album’s musical quality is very high. With good instrumentation and vocals, the album makes itself an enjoyable listen, from the first track to the very last one.
Some of my favorite tracks from this album include “The Iron Horseman”, “Savior of the Skies”, and “My Metal Boy”.
Overall, Full Steam Ahead! is an album that’s perfect for those looking for something unique and inspired. With interesting lyrics that tell stories ranging from serious to downright silly, Full Steam Ahead! Makes itself memorable and enjoyable during its 51 minute runtime.
