Jobie Reviews Music 88: Vessels (album) by STARSET

Vessels is a 2018 hard rock/progressive rock album by the band STARSET. The album contains 15 tracks, spanning 1 hour and 10 minutes of music. The album is very cinematic in nature, with some tracks feeling like they belong on a movie soundtrack! This actually is what the band intended, going on record to say that their albums are all a soundtrack to a vaguely defined narrative.

With that out of the way, this album has a great sound, characterized by the wonderful instrumentation and composition of each track. For example, the track “Back to Earth” features a very cinematic sound, ending in an equally cinematic finale which sounds amazing. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say “Back to Earth” is one of the album’s strongest tracks.

Like Living Things by Linkin Park (which I reviewed in Jobie Reviews Music 79), the album incorporates electric tunes alongside the banger rock sound it delivers. It’s done even better on this album, giving each track a powerful presence. It’s with these electric tunes that the album makes itself stand out, making all 15 tracks stand out on their own and defining the album’s sound.

The album’s tracks also have lyrics which are left ambiguous on purpose. Some people have interpreted them as being about a relationship within the album’s narrative, but this has never been confirmed by the band. Regardless, the lyrics are still great, with good vocals to match.

Some of my favorite tracks from this album include “Back to Earth”, “Starlight”, and “Frequency”.

Overall, Vessels is a great, cinematic-like album with amazing instrumentation and overall amazing sound. If nothing else, you should listen to “Back to Earth” to get a full understanding of how good this album is. An album that’s as long as a movie, that also feels like a movie.
