beyond the edge of the world is a 2020 dungeon synth album by Louie Zong. It contains 10 tracks, spanning 20 minutes of music. It’s quite different from anything else I’ve reviewed - in fact, I’ve never reviewed a dungeon synth album on Jobie Reviews Music up until this point. It sure delivers on being a great album, with the main highlight being the incredible ambience that the album achieves through a variety of means.
It’s sort of difficult to describe, but Zong creates a perfect ambient sound by using relaxing, but also mysterious, instrumentation. The tracks try to convey what they’re titled - for example, “The Inauguration of the New King” has medieval fanfare in its instrumentation. Which is also another thing that the album does well; it features a variety of medieval music (and even some modern ones) in its instrumentation, with many stringed instruments making up the composition of the album.
This great composition is what makes this album particularly of high quality - you won’t regret hitting play on this gem. Especially when Zong’s immersive ambience kicks in. You really can’t criticize this album - there’s absolutely nothing to complain about. Everything here is up to par.
My favorite tracks from this album include “Astral Invocation”, “Wall of Stones”, and “Doorkeeper of the Grove”.
Overall, beyond the edge of the world is a gem of an album with high quality instrumentation and overall composition. Its insanely immersive and rich ambient sound will take you on a musical journey, full of mysterious and relaxing medieval melodies. With the album being uploaded in full on YouTube, and as of writing is “Name your price” on bandcamp, there’s no reason not to pick up this one. Pick up this one if you’re looking for something unique to listen to.
Overall rating:
9.5/10
