Jobie Reviews Music 98: Vergelding - Dawn of the Planet of the Ashes. Requested by F63.

Vergelding - Dawn of the Planet of the Ashes is a 2018 death metal album by the band The Monolith Deathcult. The album is a mere 8 tracks long, spanning 41 minutes of music. The album’s main highlight is the interesting composition that spans its 8 tracks, with a variety of unique elements that make it sound like no other death metal album out there.

The album accomplishes this by using an interesting method of composition - that is, combining death metal with interludes by a narrator and, on some tracks, even orchestral instrumentation blended with the monstrous death metal sound the album delivers. This certainly makes for a unique sound, as I haven’t heard anything like this on any death metal album prior to this review. Very interesting indeed.

The album also has great instrumentation and vocals, with its instrumentation, as previously mentioned, being monstrous in nature. This lends itself to the loud, energetic melodies that The Monolith Deathcult puts out on this album, which shine best about midway through the album.

Of course this highly unique way of making death metal music takes a few tracks to get used to, but it still ends up being relentless in a great way. This is probably best shown in the two live tracks included at the end of the album - you can hear the room reverberate from how powerful the instrumentation is.

My favorite tracks from this album are “Come Forth Lazarus”, “Fist of Stalin”, “Rise of the Dhur-Fakar”, and “The Furious Gods - Live Graspop Metal Meeting 2017”.

Overall, Vergelding - Dawn of the Planet of the Ashes is an interesting listen for sure. With a unique, sometimes orchestral death metal sound, this one is great for having insane instrumentation while also being worth it for the interesting composition alone.
