Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews 13: What Separates Me From You (album) - A Day to Remember

Recommended

What Separates Me From You is a 2010 /post-hardcore/metalcore album by A Day to Remember. The album is packed with aggressive post-hardcore melodies, such as “Sticks & Bricks”, the powerful opening track that sets the tone for the rest of the album’s sound. The album’s sound, sonically, ranges from powerful post-hardcore tracks to aggressive, metalcore tracks which pack several punches. Lyrically, the album isn’t afraid to be stern if it wants to be: “2nd Sucks” is the band’s message to people who think that being in the band is a competition. It is highly critical of these people, and is one of the most aggressive, unrelentless tracks on the entire album. Thematically, the album has lots of tracks that seem to be about the singer reflecting on their life and their decisions. “All Signs Point to Lauderdale” sees McKinnon, the lead vocalist, lamenting his home town for being “washed up” and all of his friends “[not giving] a fuck”. Overall, What Separates Me From You is an energetic album, which can range from fast-paced post-hardcore tracks, to aggressive metalcore tracks, which never fail to pack a punch. Though “All I Want”, at 120 million plays on Spotify alone, is one of the more better known tracks off the album, it’s absolutely worth listening to the other 28 minutes of the album.
