Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #17: No Love Deep Web (album) - Death Grips

Recommended

No Love Deep Web is a 2012 experimental hip hop album by Death Grips. It is the group's second full-length album, released a few months after The Money Store. Although falling into the same genre as The Money Store, the album is significantly different from The Money Store, for a variety of reasons. Death Grips retains their electronic, chaotic instrumentals on No Love Deep Web – this time, with more kick and more bass. The instrumentals are not as fast-paced as The Money Store, but pack a punch with their full, room-shaking sound. The album establishes this new yet similar sound in its very first track, “Come Up And Get Me”. The track starts off with drum-like, deep electronic beats, before shifting to a more bassline-heavy, bassy instrumental that opens the album with a bang. Coupled with MC Ride's distressed delivery of the song's lyrics, it makes for an excellent opening track, that sets the tone for the next 41 minutes of the album. Another leftover from The Money Store is the band's creative lyricism. For instance, “World of Dogs” ends with the lyrics “Barely breathing in this world of dogs / Foam of feral reality forming on mountains of teeth / Devour the hand spit out the leash / Crown the beast my thrones the street”. My favorite tracks on the album are “Come Up And Get Me”, “World of Dogs”, “Deep Web”, and “Stockton”. I would recommend “Come Up And Get Me” for anyone who wants to get an idea of what the feel of the album is, since, as mentioned before, it sets the stage for No Love Deep Web perfectly. Overall, No Love Deep Web iterates on Death Grips' The Money Store sound by providing more kick, a more bassy sound, and a slightly slower pace. However, it retains its chaotic nature, as well as the creative lyricism of the group. If you liked The Money Store, you will likely enjoy this album as well.
