Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #37: SINNER GET READY (album) - Lingua Ignota

Recommended

SINNER GET READY is a 2021 neoclassical darkwave and avant-garde album by singer Lingua Ignota. It is her third studio album, released two years after CALIGULA. There are a few similarities between her previous two albums (CALIGULA and All Bitches Die) and SINNER GET READY. For instance, much like both of those albums, much of the singing on this album is done in sort of a “gospel” style (though the vocals on this album are less operatic than CALIGULA's were). The album also revisits the themes of the previous two albums (abuse and retribution). The most direct example of this on the album is the track “I WHO BEND THE TALL GRASSES”, which contains the lyrics “Use any of your heavenly means/Your golden scythe/Your holy sword/Your fiery arrows studded with stars/I don't give a fuck/Just kill him”. The repurposed religious references (as well as the religious slant of the album in general) is also a trait that the album shares with CALIGULA and All Bitches Die. Unlike CALIGULA, the album is almost entirely comprised of normal (or “clean”) vocals, the one exception being the track “I WHO BEND THE TALL GRASSES”. A few lyrics are yelled in between the distressed, clean vocals, creating a frightening, goosebumps-inducing delivery. This is especially true whenever the line “I don't give a fuck/Just kill him” is delivered, which is yelled with utmost sincerity and despair, that it is sure to give anyone chills. Lyrically, the album uses many religious references and near-quotes to get its message across (much like the previous two albums). Some songs are written with complexity, having a good number of non-repeating verses. Others are simplistic, yet effective, such as the ending track, “THE SOLITARY BRETHEN OF EPHRATA”, which does not have that many lyrics, but is still an effective ending track (which is certainly helped by Ignota's vocal delivery). If you listened to Ignota's album All Bitches Die, you might recall the phrase “Sinner, you'd bet get ready” being used in the track “All Bitches Die (all Bitches Die Here)”. This same phrase (and the melody that accompanied it in All Bitches Die) is reprised on the track “MANY HANDS”* Though a great callback to that album and a great phrase to use in the context of the track, the usage of it again, four years later, makes me wonder if it has special significance for Lingua Ignota. My favorite tracks from this album are “I WHO BEND THE TALL GRASSES”, “PENNSYLVANIA FURNACE”, and “THE SOLITARY BRETHREN OF EPHRATA”. Overall, SINNER GET READY is a great album from singer Lingua Ignota. Containing less screaming and mostly clean vocals, the album is similar to her other two albums in that it revisits some of the themes of her previous two albums, uses religious references and near-quotes, and has a direct callback to All Bitches Die. Given the quality of the album, it is no wonder that many publications have listed this album on many year-end lists**.

*There is something interesting about the instrumental that accompanies this track: Ignota makes use of what is either an extremely out of tune guitar, or a guitar with the string near-broken, iwhich creates this strange, unique instrumental sound that not many other songs have.

**According to Wikipedia, 15 different publications have awarded this album a spot on year-end lists, being no lower than the 41st best album of the year.
