Jobie's (Bite-Sized) Music Reviews 4: Sixteen Tons (album) by Tennesse Ernie Ford

Sixteen Tons (album) -Tennessee Ernie Ford

Recommended

Tennessee Ernie Ford delivers 12 classic country tunes in this 1955 album, most notably the song “Sixteen Tons”, the most popular Tennessee Ernie Ford to date. The album’s enjoyable listening experience stems from Tennessee Ernie Ford’s signature vocals and instrumentation, which make possible songs with a wide variety of subject matter and approaches toward their production.

For example, the song “Sixteen Tons” is a relatively slow-paced folk ballad about the laborious conditions of coal mining that were common in the early 1900s-the song “Mule Train”, however, is a song that’s simply about-well, the titular Mule Train-with Tennessee Ernie Ford adding several sound effects for effect during the song’s runtime. Overall, Sixteen Tons is a highly enjoyable and interesting dive into Tennessee Ernie Ford’s discography, this album in particular being a great showcase of the country singer’s talent to first-time listeners. This also makes the album a must-listen for country fans, particularly for fans of 1950s country music that clearly had a lot of thought put into its production.
