[NEW RELEASE] Jobie Reviews Music 110: Nurture (album) by Porter Robinson

Nurture is a 2021 electronic album by Porter Robinson. It consists of 14 tracks, spanning 59 minutes and 5 seconds of music. This album was actually in the making as early as 2015, the reason for its lengthy development being Robinson’s personal struggles while attempting to make new music. This is also the first time I’ve ever reviewed an album on the day of release, and in fact - not to brag or anything - I’m one of the first few thousand to actually listen to the full album (judging by the number of plays each track has on Spotify, as of 12:27 PM CST).

Anyway, the quality of the music itself is astounding. From the very first track all the way to the very last, Robinson demonstrates his well-established skill in creating memorable electronic tracks. The listener is taken on a journey of a variety of different electronic sounds throughout the near hour long album, with each track feeling unique in its own right.

This is especially true with the singles from this album (those being “Look at the Sky”, “Get Your Wish”, “Musician”, “Mirror”, “Something Comforting”, and “Unfold”), which are all fantastic listens. “Look at the Sky”, for example, is a highly memorable, well-produced electronic melody full of incredible sound. Its upbeat, engaging sound makes it one of the best tracks on the entire album.

The track “dullscythe” in particular is a wild electronic journey. It has very chaotic instrumentation, sometimes being very bassy and other times being a potent blend of electronic elements. The track stabilizes around 2 minutes in, and begins to sound more like a regular track. A very interesting highlight, indeed.

I would also like to take the time to briefly mention that I had listened to some of the singles from this album before the release of Nurture. In particular, I had the tracks “Look at the Sky”, “Get Your Wish”, “Mirror”, and “Something Comforting” on repeat for most of 2020. It is with this fact that I concluded, before even listening to the full album, that this album would be fantastic. You can’t have that many great singles and have it not be a great album!

My favorite tracks from this album are “Look at the Sky”, “Get Your Wish”, “Something Comforting”, and “Mirror”.

Overall, Nurture is an album that was well worth the long wait. From its absolutely wonderful electronic sound that I’m sure everyone will love (or at least appreciate), to its high quality composition which is present in every track on the album, Nurture is one of the best electronic albums I’ve heard in a long time. Robinson put in his best effort on this album, and it shows with every track on this album. Even the more experimental tracks offer up irresistible electronic sound that one can’t go around with. Make sure to listen to this one. You won’t regret it.
