Mezzanine is the third studio album by the trip hop collective Massive Attack, consisting of 3D (Robert Del Naja), Daddy G (Grant Marshall), and Mushroom (Andrew Vowles).
Mezzanine is an album that is anything but boring. Most of the tracks on the album have Massive Attack blending hip hop elements with interesting electronic elements, but some tracks lend their sound to other genres as well. For instance, opener "Angel" takes some clear influence from rock, with heavy and distorted guitars eventually coming into the mix and driving the song. Some tracks, like "Risingson", have this ethereal, dream-like quality to them that kind of reminds me of Aphex Twin.
Most of the vocals on the album are not performed by Massive Attack but are relegated to guest artists (Elizabeth Fraser, Sarah Jay Hawley, Horace Andy). All of them perform great here, but Elizabeth Fraser is certainly the best of the guest vocalists, contributing her serene yet powerful vocals on "Teardrop", "Black Milk", and "Group Four". This isn't to say that Massive Attack's vocals don't matter on this album of course. They work for the sound of the tracks, especially on "Angel", and definitely aren't bad by any means.
My favorite tracks on this album are "Teardrop", "Angel", and "Dissolved Girl".
Overall, Mezzanine is an enjoyable album from front to back. Its sound - detail-rich, strong, ethereal, and generally enjoyable, is worthy of repeat listens.
