Bottomless Pit is a 2016 experimental hip hop album by Death Grips. It is the group's fifth studio album, teased three years before in 2013 on the Death Grips YouTube channel. Bottomless Pit begins with the track “Giving Bad People Good Ideas”, which starts off with the lyrics “I keep giving bad people good ideas”*, shifting pitch each time that the phrase is spoken. Eventually, an intense guitar part comes in (played by Nick Reinhart). This track signifies another shift from the group's sound, which has been a common occurrence on all their studio albums since the early days of the group's career. It also kicks off the album with a strong track, much like “Come Up And Get Me” on No Love Deep Web did. Death Grips' instrumentals are, as always, on point on this album. Whether it be the sound of heavy bass, Zach Hill's drumming, or Andy Morin's keyboards, Death Grips blends all of these elements to craft complex instrumentals. Death Grips has proved time and time again that they aren't afraid to experiment sonically, and this album is no exception – compare tracks like “Eh” to “Giving Bad People Good Ideas”, to “Ring a Bell”, and you'll certainly see what I mean. Lyrically, Bottomless Pit, once again, brings back Death Grip's signature lyrics, their creativity still present an entire five studio albums (as well as 1 instrumental album and 1 mixtape) later, which is quite an accomplishment! MC Ride's vocal delivery of these lyrics is excellent, as it always has been. My favorite tracks from Bottomless Pit are “Giving Bad People Good Ideas”, “Spikes”, “Eh”, and “Bottomless Pit”. Overall, Bottomless Pit is yet another welcome re-iteration of the group's sound. Their instrumentals, vocals, and lyrics are still great, as usual. Longtime Death Grips fans will likely have no issue adapting to the sound of this album.
*Interesting fact: Some of the lyrics in this track are sung by Clementine Creevy, rather than MC Ride
