Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #25: Interview 2016 (EP) - Death Grips

Recommended

Interview 2016 is an electronic EP by the experimental hip hop group Death Grips. It is their second EP, acting as the soundtrack to an interview video with host Matthew Hoffman. Similarly to Fashion Week, the EP's tracks consist solely of instrumentals*. The album kicks off with “Interview A”, beginning with sounds that sound very similar to the PS2 red screen of death, before transitioning into a frenzy of fast-paced drumming from Zach Hill, and a plethora of different sounds from the keyboards of Andy Morin. This sets the stage for the rest of the EP perfectly, showcasing the key elements of this EP. Each track is absolutely amazing, featuring a satisfying mixture of the aforementioned drumming from Zach Hill, and the many sounds of Andy Morin's keyboards. Compared to Fashion Week, the instrumentals on this album are more consistent in their quality, with no one track falling flat. Texture and feel are explored in several ways on this EP – Interview E, for instance, can be distinguished by a piano-like instrument being a focal point of the track, while Interview D has more of a bass focus, backed by sci-fi-blaster-like keyboard work from Andy Morin. If you came out of Fashion Week feeling disappointed (which I didn't – my review of Fashion Week being prime evidence of this), and felt that Death Grips needed MC Ride to be good, then this EP is for you. Not only do I prefer this over Fashion Week, but the track-to-track quality, as mentioned before, feels a lot more consistent. My favorite tracks from this album are “Interview A”, “Interview B”, and “Interview D”. Overall, Interview 2016 is an excellent electronic instrumental by Death Grips. It once again proves that Death Grips doesn't need lyrics (and therefore MC Ride) to be amazing. In terms of my enjoyment , this surpasses Fashion Week (although both this and Fashion Week are great). I would recommend this to anyone who didn't like Fashion Week, as it does something similar to that album, but I feel that this EP does it better.

* Since this is an instrumental EP, no lyrics are to be had – although, there are vocalizations in “Interview F,” probably done by Zach Hill, as they don't sound like MC Ride vocalizations.
