CALIGULA is a 2019 album by singer Lingua Ignota. It is her second studio album, released two years after All Bitches Die. The sound of the album, much like All Bitches Die, is varied, sometimes leaning towards the industrial genre and sometimes leaning toward the spiritual genre. Although screamed vocals were present on All Bitches Die, the concentration of them has significantly increased on this album. Unlike All Bitches Die, where nearly all the screaming was contained within the first five minutes of the album, the screaming on this album is spread across most of the 11 tracks on the album. Some tracks begin with screaming but shift to regular (or “clean”) vocals (such as the track “BUTCHER OF THE WORLD”). Others start with clean vocals but shift in and out of screamed vocals (such as “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR”). Speaking of “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR”, that track has the most effective screamed vocals on the album, kicking in right after some clean vocals that were likely sung by Ignota while crying or close to crying, essentially creating a mid-track breakdown. During the process of listening to this album for this review, I couldn't help but sit there and think “Jesus Christ...”, due to just how raw and earnest Ignota's vocals are during that part of the song. Lyrically, the album revisits some of the themes present on All Bitches Die, such as domestic violence and retribution against domestic violence. Each track is full of meaning; “MAY FAILURE BE YOUR NOOSE” wishes immense, impeding failure on the singer's abuser, the track “FUCKING DEATHDEALER” assures the singer's abuser that she has the power and will to harm her abuser, the track “IF THE POISON WON'T TAKE YOU MY DOGS WILL” is about reclaiming autonomy through suicide, etc, etc. It is certainly darker than All Bitches Die in terms of lyrical content. Though I do recommend this album, listening to the album in its entirety is a one-and-done deal for me. The amount of pain and emotion that one can feel after listening to each track back-to-back makes it a very difficult full listen. My favorites track from CALIGULA are “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR”, “MAY FAILURE BE YOUR NOOSE”, “FRAGRANT IS MY MY FLOWER'D CROWN”, and “SORROW! SORROW! SORROW!”. Overall, CALIGULA is a great, emotional, and raw album from Lingua Ignota. With lyrical content darker than All Bitches Die, and vocals that radiate immense pain (especially on the track “DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR”), it is a very difficult listen, though I still recommend that you listen to the album.
