Habits is a 2010 alternative rock album by the band Neon Trees. It is their first studio album, and is perhaps best known for the song “Animal”. The sound of the album is full of alt rock riffs, and is a relatively medium-energy album. The only exception to this is the opening of the track “Sins Of My Youth”, which begins with a piano being played and then shifts to the usual sound of the album. The album also has a mix of synths, which the instrumentals do not focus heavily on, instead being utilized as a way to give tracks some texture. Vocally, Tyler Glenn contributes great vocals to this album. Every single catchy chorus is sung well by Glenn. This is especially true on the track “Your Surrender”, which features Glenn's best vocals on the album. Lyrically, the songs on Habits have nice lyrics, especially on the tracks “Our War” and “Sins Of My Youth”. Many of the songs on Habits have catchy choruses that are fairly memorable, such as the chart-topping “Animal”, and the track “Girls And Boys In School”. The album's lyrics revolve around themes of love (which can be shown with the opening lyrics to “Animal”: “Here we go again/I kinda wanna be more than friends”). Although I believe that the success of the song “Animal” is well deserved (after all, its catchy chorus and recognizable instrumentation make it a great listen), I also believe that the other tracks on the album should receive more recognition. While “Animal” has well over 250 million plays on Spotify, the rest of the songs on the album hover around 1 million to 4 million plays, making them underrated as compared to “Animal”. If you liked “Animal”, then you will likely enjoy at least some of the other tracks on the album. My favorite tracks from Habits are “Animal”, “Your Surrender”, and “Girls And Boys In School”. Overall, Habits is a great alternative rock album from Neon Trees. With medium-energy tracks, alt rock riffs, its use of synths for texture, catchy choruses, and nice vocals, I believe that most people will like this album. Though “Animal” is a great track (as well as one of the best songs on the album), I believe the other tracks on this album deserve more recognition than they currently have.
