Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #46: Head for the Door (album) - The Exies

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Not Recommended

Head for the Door is a 2004 post-grunge and hard rock album by the American rock band The Exies. It is their third studio album. The sound of the album is very much post-grunge, with its post-grunge choruses and many, many riffs. Though the instrumentals on this album are very nice, the album suffers from same song syndrome, wherein some songs sound very similar to one another, and it's hard to tell them apart, aside from the lyrics. There are certainly some exceptions to this; the album's lead single, “Ugly”, which begins with light, deep guitar strumming, that shifts into an explosive chorus; the song “Tired of You”, which is a slower-paced, near-acoustic song with sombre lyrics, etc. Vocally, Scott Stevens contributes some fairly nice vocals to this album. Nothing much else to say there. Lyrically, the album has some fairly well written lyrics (though I will say that there are a couple of songs that are just four lines repeated multiple times). Though this album is pretty good, I am not recommending the entire album, as, though the album has plenty of good moments, the sameness of many of the songs of the album leads me to believe that a large portion of people will probably not like the entire album. I am, however, recommending the four tracks in the “favorites” section below, as they are the key tracks on this album. My favorite tracks from the album are “Ugly”, “F.S.O.S”, “Dear Enemy”, and “Tired of You”. Overall, although Head for the Door has many good moments, it suffers from same song syndrome, with tracks that are hard to distinguish unless you look at the lyrics of each song. Therefore, I am not recommending the entire album, and instead recommending four songs from the album instead.
