The Snakeybus (Original Video Game Soundtrack) is a soundtrack album that, quite obviously, is the soundtrack to the game of the same name. Various artists contributed to the making of the album, such as the artists CityPop and leafcuts.*
Before I start the review, however, it is important to note that this soundtrack has not been released in full officially, so I had to download the soundtrack from an undisclosed source that I will not link to in this review, to avoid potential legal issues arising from doing so.
Moving on from that, the Snakeybus (Original Video Game Soundtrack) is a soundtrack that does not neatly fit into any one genre. There are many sonic directions that the album takes. For instance, “Petal Falon” is a lo-fi hip-hop affair that incorporates piano elements and digital drums that combine together to form a relaxing, chilled out track. On the other hand, “Landry” is an energetic synthpop track that incorporates quite a few groovy elements, with a prominent bass in the mix, and a guitar that would fit right into a groove track.
A lot of the songs on the soundtrack repeat portions of themselves. It is of my opinion that repetition in instrumentals is perfectly fine, and in fact can work tremendously when done correctly. Take the song “The Veldt” by deadmau5, for instance. The full version of that song is a lengthy 10 minutes long, however, because the instrumental is well-executed and does a ton sonically, the song never gets boring to listen to. This soundtrack is the same way, with pleasant instrumentals that never get tiring to the ear.
Though it isn’t my job to critique how well the soundtrack fits with the game, and how its various elements benefit the player’s experience when playing the game, I will say that the fact that the songs don’t really get tiring is a really good quality for a game soundtrack to have. Think about it: you’re going to be hearing the same set of (in this case 9) tracks for what could be hours, so you want to make sure that, if you must have repetitive songs, that they don’t get annoying after hour 4 of playing whatever game it is that you’re playing.
My favorite tracks from the album are “Landry”, “Sky Dream”, and “Paris 2”.
Overall, the Snakeybus (Original Video Game Soundtrack) is a good soundtrack, exploring several sonic directions, dipping its toes in everything from groove-infused synthpop to chilled out lo-fi hip-hop. Although the full soundtrack is not officially available anywhere, it definitely should be, as this soundtrack deserves to be heard elsewhere besides just within the confines of the game.
*Due the fact that the soundtrack has not been officially released, these are the only known artists who worked on the soundtrack. Most of the tracks on this album have unknown artists.
