Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #53: Scaring the Hoes, Vol 1. by JPEGMafia & Danny Brown

Recommended

Scaring the Hoes is a 2023 experimental hip hop collab album by JPEGMafia and Danny Brown. As of writing, it is the latest album by the former.

Scaring the Hoes is a chaotic yet captivating audio experience. The production offers a soundscape that is at once thunderous yet layered, at once raw yet excellently put together. In one moment, you could be listening to the rattling, punctuating bass of "Garbage Pale Kids", and in another, you could be listening to the jazz-tinged "Jack Harlow Combo Meal". Every sample (no matter how odd!) is utilized well, sitting comfortably in Peggy and Brown's chaos.

Peggy and Brown's vocals lend themselves well to the unpredictable beats on the album. Although they are often pushed farther back in the mix in favor of the instrumentals, I see this as more of a good stylistic choice that fits the overall feel of the album rather than some sort of flaw.

Scaring the Hoes thankfully has no absolute duds, but "Orange Juice Jones" and "HOE (Heaven on Earth)" are the two weakest tracks on the album. "HOE" simply isn't as memorable or as captivating as the other tracks, and "Orange Juice Jones" has the iffiest vocal delivery on the whole album as well as some of the more lukewarm lyrics on the album.

Overall, Scaring the Hoes is an album with production that provides a chaotic and layered soundstage, with mostly well-executed vocals that take a fitting backseat in the mix. This album is a greatly captivating and unique audio experience that you should certainly take time to listen to.
