Jobie's Bite-Sized Music Reviews #55: Whole Lotta Red - Playboi Carti

Recommended

Whole Lotta Red is Playboi Carti's second studio album, released on Christmas 2020.

Going into Whole Lotta Red, I really thought I was going to hate it. I hadn't really listened to any Carti before, but I had heard a few snippets from time to time and didn't really vibe with his sound.

Surprisingly I actually like this album. It's pretty well-produced, with exciting instrumentals that pack some kick, mainly backed up by cool synths. Carti's vocal style, while probably not for everybody, works very well with the beats on the album.

The album has three features, including Kanye, Kid Cudi, and Future - surprisingly few for an album 63 minutes long. While Kanye and Cudi actively contribute to the tracks that they're on, Future's feature on "Teen X" really doesn't do a whole lot for it (which is unfortunate, given that "Teen X" is already a weak song and a good feature may've improved it).

Although the majority of this album consists of good tracks, there are definitely a handful of songs that drag down this album. "Teen X" and "Meh" are definitely the two best examples of this. Both of them feel boring and almost like filler when you take a look at the album as a whole. M3tamorphosis is a bit underwhelming for being the longest track on the album and having a Kanye feature, although it is certainly better than both "Teen X" and "Meh".

My three favorite tracks from this album are "Control", "On that Time", and "Beno!".

Overall, Whole Lotta Red is a mostly solid release from Playboi Carti. It has plenty of songs you can bop your head or at least vibe to, although there are a handful of weak tracks on the album. I would recommend giving it more than one listen to see if its sound will click with you.
