End of the World is a 2022 EP by the post-hardcore band Senses Fail. It features four tracks from the upcoming album, Hell Is In Your Head (which I will be reviewing as soon as it comes out, I reassure you). Three of which (“I'm Sorry I'm Leaving”, “Death By Water”, and “Lush Rimbaugh”) have already been released. “End of the World/A Game of Chess” is the new track, so this review will focus on that track.* “End of the World/A Game of Chess” begins with the line “My cousin hung himself/In the backyard from a tree”, then talks about the various traits that members of the singer's family exhibit (narcissism, alcoholism, absence, etc). The song's chorus, “It's the end of the world/And all we have left/Are memories of the love we kept”, is quite uplifting, expressing the desire of the singer to persevere, even when it seems like things are going horribly (the metaphorical “End of the World”). In one of the last verses of the song, the singer pledges to heal his own wounds so that his issues don't affect his child (“I promise to sew these wounds”). The themes and lyrics of “End of the World/A Game of Chess” are similar to the theme and lyrics present in “I'm Sorry I'm Leaving”, a song about the singer promising to keep themselves together, and always come home despite needing to leave. The similarities between the two songs can especially be seen when comparing the second verse of “I'm Sorry I'm Leaving” (“I'm doing my best to keep it together/So my daughter never has to worry”), to the third verse of “End of the World/A Game of Chess” (“I promise that my pain won't be your coffin nail/I promise that I'll heal for you”). My favorite song on the EP is the titular track, “End of the World/A Game of Chess”. Overall, End of the World is a great EP, featuring the new song “End of the World/A Game of Chess”, which itself is an excellent song. Based on the new track and the three already-released singles present on this album, I have a feeling that Hell Is in Your Head will be an amazing album, well worth the four** year wait.
*All of these tracks are great as well.
**If you don't count the re-imagining of From the Depths of Dreams as new material.
